Learn to fight with sword, axe and shield, darkages style.
The Club
Practical Sword is a club for people interested in learning how to fight with a sword and other weapons of Europe's early medieval period, recreating lost fighting styles and techniques.
We train in Melbourne's inner north in Preston and are a member of the Western Martial Academies of Australia.
We are currently offering two programs.
Our Viking training focus on recreating the fighting techniques of Dark Age combat in the time of the Vikings.
Knight training is run jointly with the HMB team Ruthless Rabits and is focusd on full contact Historical Medieval Battle (HMB) and for Juniors the soft version of this.
Our Viking program includes an advancement system similar to a Karate belt system.

The Melbourne Salle is a dedicated training space for HEMA (Historic European Martial Arts) in Melbourne. It features a 150m2 training space and change rooms etc.

Our training venue in Croyden - Iron Oak Armoury
The Iron Oak Armoury is a dedicated training space for HMB (Historic Medieval Battle) in Eastern Melbourne and workshop.
The address is Unit 4 16-18 Windsor Rd Croyden on the corner of Windsor and Jackston street. I you see the "All About Window Tinting" sign you are looking at Unit 1. Unit 4 is to the right - look for the "Victa" sign.

Why fight like a viking?
Practical Sword's Dark Age HEMA program moto is "Learn to Fight like a Viking!". The basic idea is that we are a bunch of Anglo Saxon's in what is now called England, who, having withnessed recent raids from Vikings, have decided to up skill and learn to fight back.
